This Victorian mansion has been known by different names over the years; firstly, as Mayor White’s residence and later as the Parkerhouse Inn.  It was built in 1891 for Dr. Walker W. White, physician and long-time mayor of Saint John.  Dr. White and his wife had a large family.  Local lore has it that when Dr. White went away for several months of medical training in Europe, Mrs. White took it upon herself to have a third floor built as an addition to what had originally been a “little” two-storey home!

The iconic Saint John landmark has ten traditional bedroom suites and is used primarily for nightly or short-term accommodations.  Each unit has a full, en-suite bathroom (with the exception of the ground floor unit, which has a shower only as opposed to a shower/tub combination), and a fully equipped kitchenette.  One suite has a double bed, three have a queen bed each, and the other six units each have a king bed.  A few rooms are conducive to adding a complimentary cot, but not all, so be sure to advise in advance if you require more sleep space than the one bed per room.

What sets this building apart from all of its sister properties are its grand and spacious common areas, complete with two pianos (one grand and one upright), which are available for guests to enjoy at their leisure.  These common areas are also what make this property the ideal spot for a family reunion, corporate retreat, wedding party, girls’ getaway, and more…. book the whole building and have a Victorian mansion all to yourselves!  A full kitchen with two ranges, two refrigerators, two dishwashers, and an extensive inventory of dishware, glassware, silverware and cookware is available for rental as well!

The brand new Irving Oil Home Office is located right next door to 71 Sydney Street, while the Imperial Theatre and King Square are just around the corner.  The Saint John City Market is about a 2-minute walk away, as is King Street with all of its off-shooting streets and a multitude of shops, restaurants, bars and more. Queen Square with its very popular Sunday farmer’s market (May thru mid-October) is just two blocks south of 71 Sydney Street.  The Union Club is just two blocks down Princess Street from the property.
